Standards and Benchmarks for elementary students in the orchestra program.

Students should know and, at a developmentally appropriate
level, be able to:
I. Perform on an instrument, alone and in
an ensemble, varied repertoire of music.

Level
I (Grades 4-6)
* Perform, in a private, classroom or public
setting, on pitch, in rhythm, with correct dynamics, style and tone, and maintain a steady tempo.
* Perform rhythmic patterns in simple and compound meter.
* Perform independent orchestral parts while others play contrasting parts.
* Perform a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres, styles and cultures with expression applicable
to the work being performed.
* Perform with expression and technical accuracy a repertoire of music that may include modest ranges, key signatures,
meters and moderate tempi.
* Perform major scales in keys up to one flat and three sharps in the required rhythm at a moderate tempo.
* Perform ornaments and alternate fingerings as required by the literature.
* Demonstrate proper care and maintenance of the strnged instrument.
* Demonstrate proper tone production, alone or in an ensemble, through the correct use of bowings, posture and instrument
position.
* Define musical terminology as found in the literature.
* Respond to the cues of the conductor.

II. Read and notate music.
Level I (Grades
4-6)
* Read, identify, and write standard symbols used to notate time signature, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo
and articulation.
* Read, identify, write and perform whole, half, dotted half, quarter, dotted quarter and eighth notes and rests in
2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 2/2 time signatures.
* Use a syllable system to verbalize simple rhythms.
* Read, identify and define symbols and traditional terms referring to dynamics, tempo, bowing, and style.

III. Know, understand and apply appropriate criteria to music and musical performances. Level
I (Grades 4-6)
* Identify music of various styles representing individual cultures.
* Apply basic terminology used to explain music, music notation, musical instruments, and voices, and musical performances.
* Identify the sounds of a variety of musical instruments.
* Demonstrate proper performance behavior.

IV. Understand the relationship between music and history and culture. Level
I (Grades 4-6)
* Identify characteristics that make music suitable or appropriate for specific uses.
* Explain appropriate audience behavior for the context and style of music being performed.
* Understand and explain the roles of musicians in various settings and cultures.

V. Demonstrate the attitudes, values, and social skills necessary for
successful interactive group dynamics. Level I (Grades 4-6)
* Display positive attitudes toward music
and the rehearsal process.
* Interact with others in a cooperative and respectful manner.
* Recognize the merits of honesty, responsible behavior, dependability and commitment in contributing to the progress
and success of the performance ensemble.
